Special Issue on “Service-Oriented Edge Intelligence: Challenges and Solutions”

Call for Papers

With the extreme popularity of smart terminal devices, the Internet-of-Things (IoT) is expected to connect billions of devices (e.g., smartphones and smart sensors), and drive massive real-time data at the network edge. Artificial-Intelligence (AI) has demonstrated great potential to empower the edge devices from the edge data to support next generation AI-powered service applications (e.g., autonomous driving, smart city, VR/AR), and is now commonly referred to as edge intelligence especially for resource and energy-constrained devices. One great challenge faced by edge intelligence is the communication and computing bottlenecks for guaranteeing different QoS requirements of fruitful services. Pushing the AI frontier to the network edge that resides at the last mile of the Internet, could bring QoS guarantees including low-latency, energy-efficiency, privacy protection, context-awareness. However, there are significant research challenges and many questions: what’s the architecture of edge intelligence? What’s the new AI service applications are enabled? How to evaluate the communication constraints for the edge learning? And how can the edge data be secured with edge intelligence technology?

There is an urgent need to push the AI frontiers to the network edge to fully unleash the potential of the edge big data. Edge intelligence is beginning to receive great interest, with many rich data application scenarios. However, the research on edge intelligence is still in its infancy stage. Therefore, the topics of the overreaching network architectures, frameworks and emerging key technologies related to edge intelligence should be evaluated and specified.

This Special Issue (SI) aims to offer a platform for researchers from academia and industry to publish recent research findings and solicits original articles about the state-of-the-art technologies, methodologies and approaches which discuss the principles and innovations of edge computing and communication, distributed learning, service-oriented networking, edge caching and security for edge intelligence. Authors are invited to submit manuscripts on service-oriented edge intelligence topics including, but not limited to:

1) Service modeling and analysis for Edge Intelligence

2) Next-generation network architecture for Edge Intelligence

3) QoS aware resource management for Edge Intelligence
