Journal on Communications is a first-class academic journal sponsored by China Institute of Communications, founded in 1980 and published to the public at home and abroad. The purpose of the journal is to timely reflect the development level of China's information and communication science and technology, exchange new achievements in communication science and technology at home and abroad, promote academic progress and talent growth, and explore new theories and technologies. The main readers are researchers in the field of information and communication, teachers and postgraduates of communication and related majors in universities and colleges.

Journal on Communications has a high reputation in the domestic communication field. It is one of the preferred professional media for domestic communication professionals to publish academic papers. In 2019, it was selected into the Excellence Program of China Scientific and Technological Journals. In the "Overview of Chinese Core Periodicals" revised over the years, "Journal on Communications" has been selected as the core periodicals of radio electronics and telecommunications technology, and ranks among the top. China Association for Science and Technology, the former Ministry of Information Industry as an excellent science and technology journal. More than 90% of the papers are funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National "863" Program, the National "973" program, the National "ninth Five-Year plan" science and Technology Research Projects, the National Outstanding Youth Fund, the Special Fund for Trans-century Excellent Talents of the State Education Commission, and the National Defense Research Fund.
At present, The Journal on Communications is included in American Engineering Index (EI), British Science Abstracts (SA/INSPEC), Cambridge Science Abstracts (CSA) and Japanese Science and Technology Literature Database (JST).
