Information timeliness metrics and research progress for 6G network

摘要:

在未来的6G网络中,机器型通信将成为网络承载的主要业务,并催生大量垂直行业应用,如网联自动驾驶、工业物联网等,从而使这些应用成为新的经济增长点。此类应用往往涉及状态信息的收集、处理与分发,对网络的时延具有极高的要求。而现有的低时延指标在节点数多、通信资源有限的场景下难以满足此要求。针对这一问题,指出在状态更新系统中应考虑信息时效性而非仅考虑时延。在此基础上,按照利用状态信息内容程度的不同,梳理了相关代表性工作,分别介绍并比较了多种信息时效性度量。最后,讨论了信息时效性的未来研究方向与亟须解决的关键问题。

Abstract:

In the future 6G network, machine-type communication will dominate the network traffic.Many vertical applications, such as networked autonomous driving and industrial internet of things, will become new growth points.Such applications usually consist of the collection of status information and distribution of control signals, requiring ultra-low latency.However, this requirement is hard to meet with a large number of end nodes and limited communication resources.In view of this confliction, it was pointed out that the freshness of information should be considered in the status update system instead of just latency.Furthermore, according to the degree of utilization of status information, various measures of information freshness were introduced, and related representative work was summarized.Finally, the future research directions of information freshness and key questions that need to be answered were discussed.
