Abstract:

QoS routing supported by IPv6 routers owning large capacity memory, high speed CPU and interfaces is a key technology of solving IPv6 QoS. On the status of fewer QoS routing methods adapted to IPv6 environment have been developed, this paper analyses the obstacles met possibly by IPv6 QoS routing, such as the current IPv4 QoS routing schemes are not appliable, the multiple QoS metrics are difficult to be expressed and their updates cost much to be flooded and so on. It develops the potential for IPv6 of how to use its simplified packet header, flow concept, traffic class and flow label fields to support QoS routing. It also proposes the evolving strategy of implementing IPv6 QoS routing step by step from the study base of IPv4 QoS routing, which is compatible with traditional BE (best effort)routing and has little influence on the current routing system, and the ideas of extending IPv6 and its main OSPFv3 routing protocol and improving the algorithms. In conclusion, it points out the farther research directions for deploying IPv6 QoS routing theories in practice.

Key words: IPv6, OSPFv3, QoS routing, metric, flooding
