Abstract:

!!UMTS networks provide broad coverage for the packet domain users, whereas the WLAN provides higher bandwidth in restricted hot-spot areas. The distinctive advantages of these two technologies can be combined to provide seamless connectivity when a user moves across heterogeneous networks.3GPP has already proposed 3GPP-WLAN interworking in release 6.At present time there are two work groups SA1 and SA2 busy with the feasibility study of service requirement and interworking architecture. This paper will conclude three inter-working alternatives: mobile IP, gateway and emulator. After detail analysis of the interworking mechanisms, architectures and streamline handover procedures, performance will be compared among the three alternatives based on interworking hierarchy, signal and data transmission, the influence of the network, security and management of users.

Key words: !UMTS, WLAN, mobile IP, heterogeneous network
